Prime Minister Dr. Abdalla Hamdok has met in his office Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) Volker Perthes, in the presence of Cabinet Affairs Minister Engineer Khalid Omer Yusuf and Prime Minister's Advisers for Political Affairs and International Cooperation Yasir Arman and Aisha Al-Barir respectively.
The head of the UNITAMS mission said in a press statement that he briefed the Prime Minister on the discussions that took place in the Security Council during the past week related to the developments of the situation in Sudan, indicating that he discussed the failed coup attempt that took place at dawn Tuesday.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan renewed his categorical rejection of any coup attempt, stressing in this regard the rejection of all the international community represented in the Security Council, the Secretary-General of the United Nations and a group of countries, especially the Group of Friends of Sudan, which issued a statement in which it categorically rejected the coup attempt.
Mr. Perthes has added that the international community and the United Nations reject any talk of changing the civilian rule in Sudan to military rule, as well as any talk and any attempt to undermine the transitional stage and the peaceful transition towards democracy and internal peace in Sudan. He stressed the need for all participants in the political and social process in Sudan to abide by the peaceful transition line stipulated in the Constitutional Document, stressing
in this regard the importance of the Sudanese progress according to the agreement reached between them, especially progress in the social peace line, implementation of security arrangements in Darfur and the two areas, and the political transition by establishing the Transitional Legislative Council and preparation for free elections at the end of the transitional period, stressing the readiness of the United Nations to assist the Sudanese people in this process.
