Sudan has participated in the second Extra Ordinary African Union Bureau of the Assembly of Heads of States and Government, meeting on the GERD, held through videoconference on 21 July 2020.

H.E. Dr. Abdallah Hamdok appreciates the vital role of H.E. President Syril Ramaphosa, the Chairperson of the AU to lead the trilateral negotiations on the GERD. He also acknowledges the constructive discussions by the AU experts, reaffirming the principle “African solutions to African problems”.

H.E. Dr. Hamdok emphasizes the need to reach a comprehensive and binding agreement on the filling and operation of the GERD, to pave the way for future cooperation in the Eastern Nile region. He calls upon the parties to refrain from unilateral action that may jeopardize the negotiation process led by the AU.

Furthermore, he reaffirms the position of Sudan to continue the negotiations with good faith and strong political will to reach a comprehensive agreement on the filling and operation of the GERD that is acceptable for all parties.

H.E Prime Minister believes that such an agreement will open the door for future cooperation among the three sisterly countries on the Blue Nile
